The region

The wine gets its name from the city of Cahors. The vineyard was planted there by the Romans and its trade naturally developed with the transportation of barrels on the Lot river towards Bordeaux.
In the Middle Ages, it was called "black wine » and was supposedly served at the tables of Alienor d' Aquitaine's wedding with Henri II, King of England.
François 1st appreciated it so much that he used to order it directly from Cahors.
The czar Peter the Great treated himself with Cahors wine, the Orthodox Church adopted it as altar wine.
In the 19th century, Cahors vineyard covers a surface of 40 000 ha, but regrettably it was destroyed by the phylloxera between 1868 and 1884.
A new plague hit the vineyards during the terrible frost of February 1956, annihilating 99 % of the surfaces. Vineyards were replanted with Malbec, but also with Merlot and Tannat.

Its characteristic landscape is caused to the course of the Lot , the Célé and the Dordogne rivers within the calcareous limestone plateau with a rich variety of flora and fauna. The Regional Natural Park of the Causses of Quercy contributes to the conservation of this diversity.

Man has also brought his contribution over several millenniums with rock paintings or graves (Grotte of PechMerle, Grotte of Cougnac, Grotte of Foissac, …). It is also possible to discover numerous villages classified among the most beautiful of France (Autoire, Rocamadour, Loubressac, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, Capdenac-le-Haut, Cardaillac, Carennac). Do not forget to visit Cahors with its Pont Valentré and its historic heart, Figeac with its Champollion Museum, or Souillac with its Museum of the Automaton and Robotics.

You cannot leave without having tasted the melon or the lamb of Quercy, the cabécou of Rocamadour, the foie gras or the truffle, always with a sip of Cahors wine … of course !.
If you are interested in astronomy, you may pursue your discoveries, even at night! Indeed, as the area is far from the large cities of the south west, the night-sky of Quercy is a renowned observation site particularly appreciated by the amateurs of astronomy.
